PropellerChess is made by CrashTestApps.DEV. This is what we keep about you, what we do with it, and how you get it back or have it deleted. No advertising, no tracking across the web, and nothing sold to anyone.

What we keep

Your account. Your email address, and if you add them, a username, an avatar and the rating you go by.

Your chess. The games you play here and the games and openings you import, your drills, reports and results, and your preferences for each training room.

Your voice, when you use it. In the rooms with voice input, the short clip you record when you say a move.

Billing. Stripe handles payment. We keep the reference numbers Stripe gives your account and your membership, and whether the membership is active. We never see or store your card.

Running the app. The sign-in codes we send you, the session that keeps you signed in, how many games Morphy has annotated for you this year (that is how the limit is counted), and a record of the emails we have sent you so you never get one twice. If you connect lichess, the permission key lichess gives us to read your studies. If you write to us, the conversation.

What we do with it

We run the app: sign you in, keep your library, play and grade your games, bill the membership, count Morphy’s work, keep the app safe from abuse, and send the few emails it needs: a welcome when your trial starts, reminders before it ends, a note as you get close to the Morphy limit, and word when your membership ends. No marketing email.

Morphy and voice: what leaves for an AI

When Morphy annotates a game, the game goes to Morphy, our own coaching service, which runs chess engines on it and then sends the moves, the positions and what the engines found to an outside AI to write the coaching notes. The game includes the player names in its header, which for an imported game may be your name or handle. Your email address and account details are not sent.

When you say a move, the recorded clip and the list of legal moves in the position go to an outside speech-recognition service to work out which move you said. We don’t keep the clip afterwards.

Spoken narration in the training rooms is played from recorded clips inside the app; nothing about you leaves your device for it.

Cookies and your browser

The app sets only the cookies that keep you signed in, and remembers a few conveniences in your own browser, like the last address you signed in with. No advertising cookies and no analytics.

Keeping and deleting

We keep your data for as long as your account exists. An account not signed into for a year may be closed, after we email you.

Delete account, in Account, removes everything of yours from the app: your games, openings, drills, reports, preferences, profile and avatar, and it ends any membership on the spot. Two things stay: Stripe keeps the invoices and payment records the tax rules require, and we keep a scrambled version of your email address that cannot be turned back into the address, so a deleted account cannot claim a second free trial.

Your choices

You can change your profile and preferences in Account, download every game as one PGN file from the same page, disconnect lichess, and delete the account yourself. For anything else, including a copy of everything we hold about you, email us; the address is at the foot of this page.
